The two owners of Tomrods Ltd jointly share over 70 years of experience in the steel industry.  Established by John Thompson in October 1973, John now sits in Tomrods as the Executive Chairman and is extremely proud of the Company’s past achievements, but is also totally committed to a programme of continuing improvement.  In April 2006 Laurence McDougall joined the Tomrods Board after serving a twenty year highly distinguished career in Caparo Industries and he took up share ownership in Tomrods in 2008.  Laurence sits in Tomrods as the Managing Director.

Running in parallel with the development of Tomrods Ltd, the two business partners have acquired and also developed the following steel related businesses:

All Steels Trading Ltd

(A new venture started in 2006)
All Steels Trading operates as a bulk trader of a wide range of both long and flat rolled steel products and combines this service with a huge offering of dockside stock for immediate supply from order. The company also provides a unique skill in being able to source and supply niche market products including special shapes, high yield steels for the offshore industry and micro alloy grades for hot forging/pressing such as boron steel.  From its dedicated portside warehouses at Groveport on the East Coast of England the business is ideally positioned for road trailer deliveries to the UK and mainland Europe.  More distant locations around the world can also be serviced through the use of 20ft and 40ft containers.

Special Steel Sections Ltd

(Acquired in 2006)
Special Steel Sections (formerly Legg Brothers) was incorporated in 1982 and is a leading hot re-roller of special steel sections and profiles.  Its mill has a production capacity in the region of 10,000 tonnes per annum.  By using a combination of automated production and manual hand rolling, the company has established a niche in the market place whereby it can produce small batches of special sizes in an extremely efficient manner.  By comparison, today’s modern, fully automated, continuous rolling mills are designed for large, high volume production runs where size changing and set up time is slow, expensive and therefore, prohibitive.  70% of the company’s products are exported with the US being its biggest sales market.
